  1. Start with a simple book like Wine for Dummies. No kidding. I still refer to it. Then start experiencing different wines. The combo of erudition and experience can’t be beat.

  2. Best way is to try them Everybody has different tastes. Rieslings & Zinfandels (whites or blush colored wines) are on the fruitier / sweetish side. Chardonnays are dry. Cabernets or Shiraz (reds) are full bodied. Rule of thumb is: White wine is served with “white meat” like chicken, fish, and even pork. red wine is served with dark meat or red meat like steaks etc. Best way really is to try them. See what you like.

  3. Go on some tours of vineyards or go to a few wine festivals.

  4. Go to a wine store and tell them you’re interested but not sure how to select. Sometimes the local wine stores here have wine tastings so you can try before you buy too. The staff can make recommendations.

  6. The Australian wines are what sell the best these days.
Try “Yellow Tail”. It comes in red or white.

  7. I have found the staff at Beverages & More to be helpful. If you have one near you try it. If you can give them examples of what you like they can usually point you in the right direction.
